Committed to regional growth

At the BDC we have ambitious plans to support the widespread use of biorenewables across the world. A key part of this journey is to help our local economy – at home in Yorkshire – to flourish by:

  • making use of local materials,
  • adopting innovative technologies and
  • building new supply chains.

This has been a major focus for the BDC since our launch in 2012, and 2015 saw us complete the delivery of two European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) programmes designed to help local businesses innovate. The first programme focused on lab-based technical projects or short consultancy pieces as an initial step towards tackling bio-based challenges. Based on the success of this programme, we were then able to secure an additional £1M of funding to help our clients purchase equipment for use in bio-processes.

Continuing our commitment to the growth of the local bioeconomy, the BDC has secured an additional £1.79M of ERDF funding for the popular technical and financial support we have been providing to SMEs.

Working together with our colleagues at the University of York, and BioVale we are now supporting the delivery of the “BioVale Project”. Together, we will provide 120 pre-funded projects for local SMEs by 2018. We are driven by creating real impact for our clients and have committed to ambitious targets resulting from these projects, including creating 100 new jobs, setting up 10 new businesses and developing 80 new products.

On average, Yorkshire businesses are known to underspend on R&D and be less innovative than other businesses in other UK regions. The BDC seeks to redress the balance by helping local SMEs explore how they can profit from innovations in the multi-billion-pound opportunity presented by the bioeconomy.

With thanks to our funders who are supporting our commitment to apply scientific research to business challenges at the interface between academia and industry:
